Overview
Sail Tactician ("we," "us," "our," or "Company") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our app on Apple Watch and iPhone.
Data Collection
What we collect
Sail Tactician processes the following data types:
- GPS location data — Your device's precise GPS coordinates during races, used to calculate distance to marks, laylines, and wind bias.
- Heading and wind data — Derived from device sensors (compass, accelerometer) to calculate boat speed, VMG, and wind direction.
- Race performance metrics — Time-to-line, tack counts, gybe efficiency, and polar performance, computed on-device from the above.
- Boat profile information — Class name, polar coefficients, and your manually-entered boat configuration (stored locally).
- Email address (optional) — Only if you choose to provide it. Used to send product updates, racing tips, and educational content. See the section below for details.
What we do NOT collect
- No personal identifying information beyond an optional email address (no name, phone, or address required)
- No analytics or telemetry about how you use the app
- No device identifiers or advertising IDs
- No biometric data beyond what your watch's native APIs provide
- No location history sent to our servers
Email Communications
If you provide your email address — by signing up on our website, in the app's settings screen, or when contacting support — we may use it to send:
- Product updates — New features, important changes, and version release notes.
- Marketing — Occasional announcements about Sail Tactician, including new boat profiles, seasonal promotions, and related products.
- Educational content — Tactical guides, race-review walkthroughs, polar-tuning tips, and other sailing education materials.
- Transactional messages — Replies to support requests and other communications you initiate.
Your choice and control
- Providing your email is always optional. The app works fully without it.
- Every marketing or educational email includes a one-click unsubscribe link. We honor unsubscribes immediately.
- Unsubscribing from marketing does not affect transactional replies (e.g. answers to a support ticket you opened).
- You can request deletion of your email address at any time by writing to privacy@sailtactician.app.
How we handle your email
- We store your email in a reputable email service provider (such as a standard email marketing platform) under a data-processing agreement.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your email with third parties for their own marketing.
- We retain your email only while you are subscribed, plus a short suppression-list period after unsubscribe to ensure we honor your opt-out.
- Your race data, GPS tracks, and on-device records are never linked to your email or sent to any email service provider.
On-Device Processing
All race data — GPS tracks, wind calculations, performance scoring, and polar analysis — is computed entirely on your Apple Watch and iPhone. We do not have access to, receive, or process your race data on our servers.
Data Storage and Sync
iCloud Sync
Your races are synced between your Apple Watch and iPhone exclusively through your private iCloud account, end-to-end encrypted. Sail Tactician does not host, access, or see your race data during sync.
Local Storage
All race records and boat profiles are stored locally on your devices. You control when and whether they are synced via iCloud.
Data Deletion
You can delete all races from all your devices with a single tap in the app. No race data is retained by Sail Tactician or stored on external servers.
Data Export
You can export your race data in standard formats (GPX for tracks, CSV for performance metrics) at any time, giving you full portability of your records.
Third-Party Services
Sail Tactician does not share your race data with third parties. We use Apple's native services (HealthKit, CoreLocation) only for on-device computation. No race data leaves your device unless you explicitly export it.
If you opt in to email communications, your email address is processed by a third-party email service provider acting on our behalf under a data-processing agreement. Your race data is never shared with that provider.
Security
Your data is protected by:
- On-device processing (no network transmission of raw race data)
- iCloud end-to-end encryption (Apple's standard, not ours to manage)
- Local device encryption (iOS/watchOS standard)
Children's Privacy
Sail Tactician is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy periodically. We will notify you of material changes via the App Store or in-app notification.
