The Sail tab changes shape as your start approaches: a compact hub before the timer, the countdown filling the screen once it runs, and your race views from the gun. Setup is where you dial in wind, boat, marks, timer and layout. You can sail a whole race from the phone alone; the watch is optional.
Everything is sized to read from the helm, in sun, through sunglasses, and color is kept for things that mean something: the clock reddening near the gun, green or red on the favored end and your time in hand, the no-sail zone, the steering cue going green in the groove. A flash of color is always worth a look.
Pre-start hub
- Chips — Wind (the direction when set, orange until it is; tap for Setup's Wind step), Line (captured or not; tap for Marks), Type (Race / Training / Cruise; tap for Setup's Session Type step — in Training this column shows the workout instead).
- Countdown — the big number, showing the configured duration or
NOW. Tap it to change it in Setup's Timer screen. It isn't a button: starting is the blue Start key at the bottom, so a block that size can't be brushed into a start. - Favored End — reads
--until the line is captured (tap it for Marks), then a big arrow with PIN / BOAT and the bias in degrees, 0–90°. A typical committee line is within a few degrees of square. - To Line and Time to Line — live from GPS once the line is set, so you can practise timed run-ins. Time to Line reads
--when you're stationary, sailing away from the line, or past an end.
An orange Location is off warning appears if location access is denied. Tap it to open iOS settings.
Countdown
Tap Start and nothing moves: the big block becomes the clock in the same place at the same size, white on black, turning red for the last 30 seconds. Around it:
- Favored End — arrow, end name, and bias.
- To Line — your perpendicular distance to the line.
- Burn — replaces Time to Line once the countdown runs: seconds in hand (green,
+) or late (red,−) to hit the line at the gun at your current approach. It reads--while you're sailing away from the line or past an end, rather than a stale number. - Beyond pin / Beyond boat — distance is measured square to the line, so it keeps working past the ends. The app says when you're outside them and holds Burn at
--. - Transport keys — three large buttons in the same order as the watch, always on screen (Reset and Sync are dimmed until a countdown runs):
- Reset (red ✕) — cancels the sequence, after a confirmation.
- Sync (orange ↻) — rounds to the nearest minute to match the committee's signal: 4:40 goes to 5:00, 4:20 to 4:00. Phone and watch always land on the same time. A sync gives one tap and, in voice mode, says the minute you landed on ("three minutes") so you know it took without looking down. It never sounds the long beep.
- Start / Pause / Resume (blue ▶ / ❙❙) — the whole sequence from one key.
At zero a long beep sounds and the screen switches to your race views.
During the race
If Black Box is on, this screen is replaced by the clock alone — see Black Box under Settings. Otherwise:
Metric views are full-screen grids of tiles you swipe vertically between. See Metric Views below for choosing them; this is what the tiles show.
- SPEED, AVG, MAX; HEADING° and COG°; VMG; DISTANCE, ELAPSED, BPM; TACKS and GYBES (counted live); WIND° and NO-SAIL ZONE; HEEL° and TRIM° (mounted phone only); COUNTDOWN.
- Start line — DTL (distance to line), TTL (time to line) and TTB (time to burn). They keep working after the gun, which is what tells you you're OCS.
- Windward mark — DTM (distance to mark) and VMC (speed made good toward it), once a mark is set.
- Heading Tape — a compass strip past a fixed index, with your no-sail zone and target angles shaded, so a lift or header shows as movement rather than a number to compare. Full-width slot only.
- Compass — the full rose: heading at the top, the no-sail wedge, and the laylines to your windward mark. Full-width slot only.
- VMG Steering Cue — one line telling you where to steer: IN THE GROOVE (green) within 3° of target, otherwise an arrow, an action and the degrees — ← BEAR OFF 14°. It reads SET WIND until a wind is set. Fits any cell.
Every VMG number is only as good as your wind. A forecast covers a grid square, not your bit of water. Point to Wind in Setup — bow into the wind, one tap — is worth the thirty seconds.
Setup
Setup is a list, not a sequence. This race holds wind and marks with their state on the right; Remembered holds boat, countdown, session type and race view. Tap a row, change what you came for, and tap ‹ to come back; Done closes Setup. Each screen has an ⓘ explaining what it does — on Marks, the full sail-to-each-mark procedure.
- Wind — three cards: Weather (the forecast), Point to Wind (your current bow heading — point the phone into the wind first), and Manual Entry (type it, or nudge with −/+). Whichever you used last is applied and highlighted.
- Boat — the boat you're racing, with its angles and no-sail zone. Tap it to open the same picker as Settings → Boat. Rigging notes print in full underneath.
- Marks — sail past the pin and the boat and tap each row to capture it. A row is a toggle: tapping a captured end drops it, so a mis-tap costs one tap rather than a sail back to the mark. Clear line removes both. The windward mark isn't captured here — see Course & Windward Mark.
- Timer — countdown length (
0for an immediate start), Cue Final Seconds, and a Sound & Haptics row for audio style, volume, Test Sound and haptic taps. - Type — Race, Training, or Cruise. Training adds a Workout section: pick a guided workout or Free Training.
- Layout — which race view opens at the gun. Tap the pencil to edit one, or Create Custom View.
Everything saves as you set it. Setup doesn't start the race — go back to the hub and tap Start.
Metric Views
Settings → Display → Metric Views curates the views you swipe between during the race.
- Default Views at the top: the Race view a race (or training) opens on, and the Cruise view a cruise opens on. The session type picks between them at the start, so you never reconfigure the screen. A cruise is offered only views without start-line or VMG metrics, and can swipe to any other shown view that has none.
- Views below lists every view. Tap one to edit it; the caption says which default it is.
- Layouts. The stacks — 1-up, 2 Stacked, 3 Stacked, 4 Stacked — give every metric the full width. The grids — 2 Side, 3-up (hero + two), Quadrant, 6-up, 8-up — fit more on a page in two columns. A number's size is set by the width it gets, so four metrics render roughly two-thirds larger in 4 Stacked than in Quadrant. Use a grid to see more; use a stack to read it from the helm.
- Tap a cell in the preview to assign a metric. The Heading Tape and Compass need a full-width slot with height: any cell of a 1-up, 2 Stacked or 3 Stacked, or the hero cell of a 3-up. They aren't offered elsewhere.
- The eye shows or hides a view in the race pager. The cruise view always opens a cruise, shown or not.
- Class Compliant (Lock Swipe) makes a view a locked screen: paging is disabled during the race so you can honestly race a class that restricts instruments (Race Compliant is heading and speed only, which is what an MC Scow allows). You can still end the race or switch tabs.
Eight presets ship: Race View (8-up), Compass, Tape + Speed, Big Speed, Start Tactician, Race Compliant, Full Data (6-up: speed, heading, VMG, distance, tacks and elapsed time — what a race opens on), and Cruise (6-up: speed, heading, distance, elapsed time, average and top speed — what a cruise opens on). Race View and Full Data are shown by default; tap the eye to add others. Reset to Defaults restores these defaults; a library you've already set up keeps your own race choice. Presets can't be renamed or deleted; your own can be added, edited, reordered, hidden or deleted. Reset to Defaults restores the shipped set.
Recording a session
- Set the countdown in Setup → Timer and the session type on the hub.
- Tap Start — recording begins at once and the timer counts down, with cues in the final seconds and a long beep at the gun.
- Race. On the watch the pre-start screen goes away at the gun (its Start would begin a second recording) and comes back when you end the race.
- Tap End Race and confirm. The session is saved to the Logbook and syncs to iCloud when connected.
